Add your first domain with the Record Wizard

The Record Wizard walks you through adding a domain to DMARCS in three screens. You will publish one DNS record, DMARCS will check it, and reports start flowing in within a day or two.

Before you start

You need to be able to add a TXT record to your domain's DNS. If someone else manages DNS for you, you can still run the wizard: it shows you the exact record to send them, and saves your progress until they have added it.

The three steps

  1. Enter your domain

    Type the bare domain, for example example.com. Don't include https:// or anything after the domain name. If you paste a full web address by mistake, the wizard trims it down for you. Click Continue.

  2. Publish the DMARC record

    Choose a starting policy. Pick none unless you have a specific reason not to. It doesn't change how your mail is delivered; it just switches on reporting so you can see who is sending as your domain. You can tighten it later.

    The wizard shows the record to publish. Add it as a TXT record at your DNS provider:

    The two mailto: addresses are how your reports reach DMARCS. Leave them exactly as shown. Once the record is saved at your DNS provider, click I've Published the Record.

  3. Verify

    Click Verify Record Now. DMARCS looks up _dmarc.yourdomain.com in live DNS. When it finds the record, the domain is added to your account and you can go straight to the Dashboard.

If verification fails

DNS changes take anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours to become visible worldwide. If you clicked Verify right after saving the record, wait ten minutes and click Retry.

The wizard shows the exact hostname it looked up. The most common mistakes:

  • The record was added to the bare domain instead of the _dmarc host. Some DNS providers want _dmarc in the Host field, others want _dmarc.example.com. Check your provider's help if unsure.
  • There is already a second _dmarc TXT record. Two DMARC records cancel each other out at most receivers. Keep only one.
  • The value was pasted with extra quotes or a missing semicolon. Use the wizard's copy button rather than retyping.
Your progress is saved as you go. If your session times out or you close the tab while waiting for DNS, come back and the wizard picks up where you left off. If DMARCS verifies the record but can't add the domain for another reason, it tells you the specific cause and keeps your draft.

What happens next

Mailbox providers such as Google and Microsoft send DMARC reports once a day. Expect your first data on the Dashboard within 24 to 48 hours. In the meantime, add any other domains you own from Settings.
